“Progress not perfection.”
Sometimes progress doesn’t feel like progress.
It’s natural to feel disappointed when the results of your efforts don’t meet your expectations, but it’s important to remember that progress often takes time and isn’t always a straight line.
Here are a few tips that can help you keep making progress, even when you’re feeling disappointed:
- Reflect on your goals and expectations: Take some time to reflect on your goals and expectations, and consider whether they are realistic and achievable. If you’re feeling disappointed because your progress isn’t meeting your expectations, it may be because your expectations are too high. Adjusting your goals and expectations to be more realistic can help you stay motivated and focused.
- Celebrate small victories: As you work towards your goals, be sure to celebrate small victories along the way. This can help you stay positive and motivated, and can also help you see that you are making progress, even if it’s not as fast as you would like.
- Seek support and advice: If you’re feeling stuck or frustrated, don’t be afraid to seek support and advice from others. This could include friends, colleagues, or mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement. Having a support network in place can help you stay motivated and on track.
- Keep learning and growing: Finally, remember that progress often comes from learning and growing. Keep learning new skills and gaining new knowledge, and be open to feedback and new ideas. This can help you continue to make progress, even when you’re feeling disappointed with the results.
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits (see link below), has often described progress as attempting to melt ice. You may put in a lot of effort, go to the gym, and eat healthy food for 30 days but find the results disappointing. That energy isn’t lost, just stored. It may only be 29 degrees. All the action happens at 32 degrees. Keep going.
